PORTRAIT PAINTING ROCEDURE

Scott Johnston will travel to a client’s location to obtain information needed to complete a commissioned portrait. Typically, there will be one to two days on location. Artist will spend time getting to know the subject and discussing details of the portrait including size, where it will hang, clothing, setting, and pose. The subject will be photographed under a variety of lighting conditions and in different poses.

At this time, or during a subsequent visit, the artist will complete a head sketch in oil of the subject from life. Approximately two to three hours are needed to complete the sketch and it can be done at almost any location. This is not required, but it gives the artist a valuable color resource when painting the final portrait.

Back in the studio, the artist will complete a rough sketch which is sent to the client for approval. This is not for likeness, but to illustrate the pose and composition.

Upon sketch approval, the artist begins work on the final painting. Toward the end of the process, an additional sitting may be requested in order to achieve the most life-like results.

Completion time from the first sitting to the final painting varies from one month to a year.

Johnston is happy to assist with framing advice or to have the portrait framed upon request.

FEES start at $6,000.
